WARM SEASON SOD TIPS: Important Tips for Longer Turf Life
Mow Like a Pro
- For Bermuda grass, nothing delivers a cleaner, healthier cut than a reel mower.
- Because Bermuda thrives at lower mowing heights, a reel mower allows for precise, consistent cuts at 0.5 to 1.5 inches, which is ideal for maintaining that vibrant, professional look.
- Frequent mowing with a reel mower also encourages horizontal growth, resulting in a tighter, more resilient lawn.
Sunlight is Essential
- Bermuda grass thrives in full sun—aim for at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Avoid planting in shaded areas; Bermuda performs poorly in low light.
Fertilize Strategically
- Start feeding in late Spring after the lawn fully greens up.
- Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
- Stop fertilizing 6–8 weeks before the first expected frost.
Dormancy in Cooler Months
- Bermuda grass is a warm-season turf that naturally goes dormant when temperatures drop, typically turning brown or straw-colored in late fall and winter.
- Dormancy is not a sign of stress! The grass is simply conserving energy and will green up again in Spring when soil temperatures rise above 65°F.
Overseeding with Ryegrass for Winter Color
- If you prefer a green lawn throughout the Winter, overseeding with perennial ryegrass is a great option.
Best Time to Overseed
- Mid to late fall (when daytime highs are in the 70s and nighttime lows are in the 50s).
