A Green Healthy Lawn Requires a Year Round Commitment
WATERING GUIDE FOR A HEALTHY AND HAPPY LAWN
At Delta Bluegrass Company, we take pride in providing high-quality sod and strive to ensure customer satisfaction. Proper handling, installation, watering, and ongoing care are crucial, as sod is a live product whose health and performance depend upon these factors.
First Two Weeks:
- On installation day, water deeply so moisture penetrates sod and 2" of native soil.
- Keep sod and soil consistently moist.
- Water 4–5 times per day, 5–6 minutes each time (adjust for soil type and irrigation system).
- Avoid soggy conditions — standing water means too much irrigation.
- Clay soils may need shorter, fewer watering cycles (e.g., 5 minutes, 4x/day).
- Sandy loam may require slightly longer, more frequent cycles (e.g., 7 minutes, 5x/day).
Recommended Schedule for New Sod:
- Four short irrigations during the day: 6:00 am / 10:00 am / 2:00 pm / 6:00pm – 5 minutes each cycle.
- One deep soak at night: 2:00 am – 10 minutes.
- Begin reducing watering cycles just before the first mowing (typically 10-14 days) to firm up soil.
- If run off of water is excessive or sod is soggy, reduce the length of watering time, not the frequency.
MOWING TIPS FOR A HEALTHY LAWN
- Wait to Mow – Don’t mow until roots are established (about 2 weeks, longer in cool weather).
- Follow the 1/3 Rule – Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
- Keep Blades Sharp – Sharp blades = cleaner cuts and healthier grass.
- Mow When Dry – Avoid mowing wet grass to prevent clumps and uneven cuts.
- Water Regularly – Change mowing direction each time for an even, upright lawn.
- Recycle Clippings – Leave grass clippings when possible to return nutrients to the soil.
- Adjust by Season – Mow higher in summer for moisture retention; lower in cooler months for strong roots.
FERTILIZER GUIDE FOR A HEALTHY LAWN
The Best Lawns Begin with
™ Fertilizer

When & How to Fertilize
- Before Installation – Apply Bolero™ Sod & Seed STARTER before laying sod or seeding.
- After Establishment – Switch to Bolero™ Lawn Food for ongoing care.
- Spring: Feed for strong growth as your lawn wakes up.
- Summer: Strengthen turf to handle heat and stress.
- Fall: Build root reserves for cooler months.
(Optional Winter Feeding in mild climates for year-round green.)
